How do I restore my wood floor?

Natural wood floors can come in an almost bewildering array of styles, wood types, hardness and price. Furthermore, there is an extensive choice of finishes that can be applied to any given floor type. The choice of both the wood type and the applied finish will depend on factors such as the desired appearance (including the level of shine), durability and level of ongoing maintenance required.

In basic terms wood finishes can be split into two categories. The first category we can call “surface sealers”. These finishing products are not absorbed into the wood but provide a protective layer on the surface only. A popular example of a surface finish would be varnish. The second category can be described as “penetrative sealers”. These products are absorbed into the top surface of the wood to provide a protective seal. A floor which has been waxed would be an example of a penetrative seal.

As you might imagine the maintenance required for these various types of finishing products are quite different. In the case of a surface sealer the process to restore the floor has to involve removing the old sealer. This would normally involve using either solvent stripping agents or mechanical sanding machines. After the surface sealer has been removed a new finish can then be applied. In the case of a wax penetrative sealer the maintenance can be much more straightforward. If the floor is regularly cleaned, re-waxed and then buffed every 6 to 12 months, the shiny floor surface can be maintained in an attractive condition (without regular stripping or sanding).

How do I test my floor to see if it has a wax finish as opposed to a surface finish?

To determine if your floor has a wax finish, apply a couple of drops of water to an inconspicuous area. If white spots appear under the drops of water within 10 minutes the floor has a wax finish. To remove the white spots gently rub them with fine steel wool dampened with wax.

Abracadabra can revitalise your waxed wood floor!

If your waxed floor has lost its shine and lustre we have got the perfect solution for you! We provide a re-waxing and buffing service that will restore a shine to even the most neglected of waxed floors. As long as your floor is still in good enough condition that it does not need re-sanding, this could be the perfect cost-effective revitalising solution!

Here is our FIVE stage wood floor waxing process:
1) The room is first protected (i.e. skirting boards & furniture) with masking tape and protective sheeting.
2) The floor is cleaned with specialist cleaners to remove surface soiling and then left to dry.
3) Our top-grade professional floor wax is evenly applied to the floor using hard floor application system.
4) The floor is then dried so that the wax hardens.
5) Using specialist rotary machines the waxed surface is buffed to a high gloss shine.

If you would like a free assessment of your waxed wood flooring, or advice on how best to maintain it, please give us a call on 0800 987 5413 and we would be more than happy to help.

Waxing & buffing a dance floor!

Here are some pictures of a wooden dance floor that we restored for the GAA sports club in South Ruislip. It just goes to show that even the most well trodden floors can still be given a really nice surface shine though our waxing process!
